Ductless vs central air in Ontario comes down to one question before any other: does your home already have ductwork worth using? If it does, central air is usually the cheaper and simpler answer. If it does not, the comparison changes completely, and so does the rebate you can claim. Central air is the better choice for most Ontario homes that already have sound ductwork, because you are only replacing one outdoor unit and one coil. Ductless wins where there are no ducts, where one room will not hold temperature, or where a cold climate heat pump qualifies for an Ontario rebate.

That first sentence is the short version. The rest of this page is the arithmetic behind it, including the rebate that changes it.

Do you already have ducts?

The single question that settles most of this comparison is whether your home has ductwork that is already in reasonable condition. Everything else is secondary to it. A home with sound ducts can take central air for the cost of the equipment and a day of labour. A home without ducts has to have them built, which means opening ceilings and walls, and that work often costs more than the air conditioner.

This is why the same two houses on the same Mississauga street can get opposite advice. A 1970s side split with a finished basement and existing trunk lines is a central air house. A 1920s Brampton semi with radiators and no ducts anywhere is a ductless house, and no amount of comparing SEER2 numbers changes that.

Installed prices in Ontario in 2026 overlap heavily at the low end and separate at the high end. The band below reflects what Ontario contractors are publishing publicly, not a quote for your home, and every one of these numbers moves with capacity, electrical work and how far the outdoor unit sits from the indoor equipment.

Read the two single-unit rows together and the sticker price argument mostly disappears. A single zone ductless system and a single stage central system land within a few hundred dollars of each other. The gap only opens once you add heads, or once you have to build ducts.

The rebate almost nobody mentions

A cold climate air source heat pump can qualify for up to $7,500 CAD under Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings program, and most ductless comparison pages leave this out entirely. That is a larger swing than any efficiency difference between the two systems, and it applies to ductless equipment that heats as well as cools.

Two honest qualifications, because this is where these pages usually overreach. First, the program does not list a separate ductless or mini split category. A ductless system qualifies only where the specific unit you install is a cold climate air source heat pump that appears on Natural Resources Canada’s list. Second, “up to” is doing real work in that sentence. The amount depends on the equipment and the program rules in force on your install date, so treat $7,500 CAD as a ceiling to check, not a number to budget.

What each costs to run

Running cost is decided far more by sizing and by how you use the system than by the badge on the outdoor unit. An oversized system of either type short cycles, which wastes electricity and leaves humidity behind. This is the part of the decision that a good load calculation settles and a spec sheet cannot.

We deliberately do not publish a maximum efficiency figure for either system here. Efficiency numbers vary by model and change between model years, and the only number that means anything for your quote is the one printed on the spec sheet of the exact unit being installed. Ask for it in writing. If a contractor quotes an efficiency figure without naming the model, that figure is decoration.

The duct loss number everyone repeats

You will see a claim that ducts lose 20 to 30 per cent of the energy moving through them repeated on nearly every Ontario page on this topic, and it appears in Google’s own AI summary of this question. It is worth understanding where it comes from before you let it decide anything.

That figure traces to United States research and to homes where ducts commonly run through unconditioned attics and crawl spaces. We could not locate an NRCan or Energy Star Canada figure that applies specifically to Ontario housing stock. The mechanism is real, but the size of the loss depends on where the ducts run. In most of the Peel Region homes we work in, the ducts run through a finished or semi-finished basement inside the heated envelope, where heat that leaks from a duct is not leaving the house. That is a materially different situation from a slab-on-grade home with attic ducts, and it is why we will not republish the number as though it applies evenly.

The honest version: if your ducts run through a cold attic, an unheated crawl space or a detached garage ceiling, duct losses are a genuine argument for ductless. If they run through your basement, they are a much weaker one.

How we know this. The Ontario price bands on this page were collected on September 9, 2026 from five publicly published Ontario HVAC contractor pages plus the figures Google’s AI Overview surfaced for this query, and are reported as published ranges rather than as our own quotes. The rebate amounts were read directly from the Save on Energy program page on the same date, not from a summary. Sample sizes are small and we are not reporting a percentage from them.

Housing stock decides this more reliably than preference does. The table below maps the home types we work in across Peel Region and the west GTA to the system that usually fits, and names the exception in each case so the table is usable rather than merely tidy.

Choose ductless if

Best for: homes with no ductwork, homes with one room that never holds temperature, additions and finished attics, and anyone who wants heating and cooling from one system with a shot at the Ontario rebate.

Skip if: you already have sound ducts and you want whole home cooling at the lowest installed price. In that case go straight to air conditioner installation cost.

The possible downside, from us: ductless puts a visible unit on your wall in every room you cool, and multi zone systems climb past central air quickly on price. Some homeowners dislike the look enough that it outweighs the efficiency case, and that is a legitimate reason to choose central air.

Choose central air if

Best for: homes with existing ducts in decent condition, whole home cooling, and households that want the indoor equipment out of sight and one thermostat to think about.

Skip if: you have no ducts, or your problem is one specific room. Building ducts to solve a single hot bedroom is rarely the cheaper path.

The possible downside, from us: a cooling only central unit is not an eligible measure under the Home Renovation Savings program as it is written today, so the rebate that a cold climate heat pump can claim is simply not available on that path. If your ducts are also in poor shape, the repair cost belongs in the comparison and we will put it there.

Should I get mini splits or central air?

Get central air if your home already has ductwork in reasonable condition and you want whole home cooling at the lowest installed price. Get a ductless mini split if you have no ducts, if one room will not hold temperature, or if you want a cold climate heat pump that heats as well as cools and may qualify for an Ontario rebate.

What are the downsides of ductless air conditioning?

The indoor head is visible on the wall of every room you cool, and each head has its own small filter to clean. Multi zone systems climb past central air on price once you pass two or three heads. Ductless also does little for a closed off room with no direct air path from a head, which is a common disappointment in homes with many small rooms.

Is a mini split cheaper to run than central air?

Often, but not automatically. A mini split lets you cool only the rooms in use, which is where most of the saving comes from, and it avoids duct losses entirely. A correctly sized central system serving a home with ducts inside the heated envelope can run close to it. Sizing and usage decide this more than system type does.

What is cheaper to run, a ducted or split system?

A split system usually costs less to run when you only need part of the house cooled, because each head runs independently. A ducted system tends to win when you want the whole home at one temperature, since one larger compressor is generally more efficient than several small ones running at once. Match the system to how you actually live in the house.

What AC brands to stay away from?

We will not publish a list of brands to avoid, because that is not where the risk sits. Most failures we are called to are installation faults, wrong sizing, poor line set work or a system never commissioned properly, rather than a defective brand. Ask who is installing it, what their load calculation says, and what the warranty requires. Those answers predict outcomes better than the badge does.

Does a ductless system qualify for the Ontario heat pump rebate?

Only if the specific unit is a cold climate air source heat pump listed on Natural Resources Canada’s qualified products list. Ductless equipment is not eligible simply for being ductless, and cooling only models do not qualify at all. Confirm the exact model against the list, and confirm current amounts on the Save on Energy program page, before you count on any figure.

The final verdict

Ductless vs central air in Ontario has one honest default: for most homes with usable ductwork, central air remains the sensible answer, and we will tell you so even though ductless is the larger ticket. Where there are no ducts, where one room defeats the rest of the house, or where a listed cold climate heat pump brings the Home Renovation Savings rebate into play, ductless is not the compromise it is often presented as. It is the better system, and the rebate can close the price gap that used to be the argument against it.

The question to settle first is still the boring one. Walk your basement, find out where your ducts run and what condition they are in. That answer decides more of this than any spec sheet will. Every winter the same argument plays out in Ontario houses: one person is cracking from dry air, the other is wiping water off the window ledge, and both are right. Winter humidity is not a comfort setting you pick once. It is a ceiling set by how cold your windows get, and the number underneath that ceiling is lower than most advice admits. Short answer

Around 30 per cent. Health Canada names 50 per cent in summer and 30 per cent in winter, and gives 30 to 50 per cent as the year-round band. In a cold snap the real limit is lower still, because the moment your window glass falls below the dew point of the room air, water forms on it.

Applies to Mississauga, Brampton, Etobicoke, Milton, Georgetown, Caledon and Bolton. The physics is identical everywhere; only your window and your outdoor temperature change.

The number, and why two Health Canada pages differ

Health Canada publishes two figures for indoor humidity, and they are not in conflict once you see what each is for. The mould guidance gives a band you should stay inside all year. The humidifier guidance gives a seasonal target within that band, and for winter that target is the bottom of it. Most pages quote the first and ignore the second, which is how "aim for 40 to 45 in winter" became common advice that neither document supports.

Read together, the instruction for an Ontario winter is clear enough: stay inside 30 to 50, and aim at the 30 end. Not because dry air is pleasant, but because the alternative in a cold climate is water on your building. That is the part the next section is about.

Indoor humidity in winter is capped by your windows, not your comfort

In winter your maximum indoor humidity is decided by the coldest surface in the room, and in almost every Ontario house that surface is a window. Warm indoor air holds a certain amount of water vapour, and when that air touches glass cold enough, the vapour turns back into liquid. The temperature at which that happens is the dew point of your indoor air, and it depends only on the room temperature and the humidity.

This is why the advice cannot be a single number. At 20 degrees and 30 per cent humidity, your dew point is about 2 degrees, so the glass has to get near freezing before anything forms. Push the same room to 50 per cent and the dew point climbs to about 9 degrees, which a double-glazed window in a Peel Region February reaches easily. The humidity did not become unhealthy. It became more than your windows can carry.

The same figures drawn out. As the humidity in the room rises, the temperature at which water forms on your glass rises with it. Where that line crosses how cold your window actually gets is your personal ceiling.

The formula, if you want to run it: dew point equals b times gamma divided by a minus gamma, where gamma is the natural log of the humidity as a fraction, plus a times the temperature divided by b plus the temperature. With a equals 17.62 and b equals 243.12 you will land on the same numbers we did.

What too dry actually looks like

Below about 30 per cent the complaints stop being about comfort and start being about your house. Static shocks off a door handle, timber floors opening at the seams, doors that suddenly stick or suddenly do not, instrument bodies and furniture joints moving: these are moisture leaving the wood, and they are the reason the lower bound exists rather than dropping to zero. The human side, dry eyes and dry skin and a scratchy nose, is real but it is the part we are least qualified to speak about, so this page treats it as a comfort signal rather than a medical one.

How to raise it, cheapest first

If your indoor humidity in winter is genuinely below 30, work down this list in order, because the first two cost nothing and the last one is a permanent install. Most Ontario houses that feel painfully dry are not short of a humidifier; they are running one that is switched off, set wrong, or blocked with scale. Only after those are ruled out is new equipment the answer.

The part people skip, and why it matters

A humidifier that is not cleaned stops being a comfort appliance and becomes a problem of its own. Health Canada is direct about this for portable cool-mist units: clean and disinfect the water reservoir on a regular basis and follow the manufacturer's directions, because bacteria collect and multiply in sitting water and a cool-mist unit does not boil the water, so it does not kill them. That is the whole argument for the weekly clean, and it is not ours, it is theirs.

On water, Health Canada's position is more relaxed than the marketing suggests: the number of particles released into the air is generally much lower with distilled water, but tap water is fine in most cases. So distilled is a dust question, not a safety requirement. For a furnace-mounted unit the equivalent job is the annual pad or panel change and a look at the drain, which is part of a normal heating service visit and is worth doing before the season rather than in February.

Safety

A furnace-mounted humidifier is plumbed and wired into a gas appliance. Fitting or moving one is work for a TSSA-registered fuels contractor, not a weekend job. Opening a furnace cabinet exposes you to gas, electrical and sharp-edged components at once.

Separately, no humidity setting protects you from carbon monoxide. Only a working CO alarm does. If one sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 from outside.

Too dry, or just a cold window?

Two questions, and it points you at a row of the tables above. Every answer already appears in the prose, so nothing here depends on the script running.

1. On a cold morning, what do the windows look like?

The finder needs JavaScript. The same answers are in the symptom table: wet glass means lower the humidity, dry glass with a reading under 30 per cent means raise it, and no reading at all means buy a hygrometer first.

How we know this

Two kinds of claim appear on this page and they are sourced differently. The humidity targets and the humidifier cleaning guidance are quoted from two Health Canada pages, named and dated below, and where those two pages differ we show both rather than picking the one we prefer. The dew point table is our own arithmetic from the Magnus approximation, with the constants printed so you can reproduce it. Nothing here is a survey, an estimate, or a figure we read on another contractor's site.

Two things we are not claiming. We have no first-party figure on this page. The number that belongs here is the share of Peel Region homes we visit in winter that are already running a humidifier badly rather than lacking one, with the sample and the window, and we have not counted it to a standard we would put our name to. Frequently asked questions

What humidity should a house be at in winter in Canada?

Around 30 per cent. Health Canada's humidifier guidance names 50 per cent in summer and 30 per cent in winter to prevent mould growth, and its mould guidance gives 30 to 50 per cent as the band to stay inside year round. In a cold snap your own ceiling may be lower than 30, because the limit is set by how cold your window glass gets rather than by the calendar.

Is 20% humidity too low in winter?

It is below the band Health Canada names, so it is worth raising if your windows allow it. At 20 per cent you will notice static shocks and wood shrinking, which is moisture leaving your floors and furniture rather than a comfort preference. Raise it toward 30 and stop there, checking the glass on cold mornings as you go.

How dry is too dry for a house?

Below 30 per cent is where the lower bound sits, and the house tells you before a meter does. Static discharge off door handles, gaps opening between floorboards, and doors that change how they fit their frames are all the same signal. The building is giving up moisture to the air, and that is what the 30 per cent floor exists to prevent.

What is the ideal humidity level in a home during cold weather?

There is no single ideal number, and that is the honest answer. The target is around 30 per cent, but your actual ceiling is whatever your coldest window can tolerate before water forms on it. On a mild December day you might hold 35 comfortably; during a deep cold snap the same house may need to sit lower. Watch the glass, not the calendar.

Can mold grow at 55 humidity?

55 per cent is above the range Health Canada names, and its guidance is to maintain relative humidity between 30 and 50 per cent. Mould needs moisture, a surface and time, so a whole house at 55 is a risk rather than a certainty. The bigger danger in winter is local: one cold corner or window frame can sit far wetter than the room average.

At what percentage, do you keep humidity at home during winter season?

We set customers up around 30 per cent and then adjust down if their windows say to. That last part matters more than the starting number, because two houses on the same street with different windows have different ceilings. A humidistat set once in November and never looked at again is the most common thing we find on a winter call.

The short version

Aim for about 30 per cent in winter, and let your windows overrule that if they disagree. The 40 to 45 per cent figure repeated across most winter humidity advice is above what Health Canada names for the season and above what an ordinary double-glazed window in Peel Region can carry on a cold night.

Buy a hygrometer before you buy anything else. If the glass is wet, lower the humidity rather than wiping it. If the glass is dry and the reading is genuinely under 30, check the humidistat you already own before shopping. Most no-heat calls we take in the first cold week of the season are furnaces that were fine in May and have simply not been asked to do anything since. Getting your furnace ready for winter is mostly about asking it early, on a mild day, when a fault is a booking rather than an emergency.

This page is the homeowner half of that job: eight checks that need no tools, what the first firing should sound and smell like, what to do when it does not start, and the carbon monoxide alarm rule that changed on January 1, 2026. How often the furnace should see a technician, and what that visit covers, is a different question with its own guide on how often to service a furnace.

Short answer

Get your furnace ready for winter in late September or early October, on a mild day: switch the thermostat to heat, fit a fresh filter, open every register, clear a metre around the furnace, check the outdoor vent pipes, test every carbon monoxide alarm, restart the humidifier, then run one test cycle and listen to it.

Since January 1, 2026, an Ontario home with a fuel-burning appliance needs a carbon monoxide alarm adjacent to each sleeping area and on each storey without one. Anything inside the furnace cabinet, and anything involving gas, belongs to a TSSA-certified gas technician.

When should you do this in Ontario?

Late September to early October is the window for getting a furnace ready for winter in Peel Region, and the trigger is the weather forecast rather than the calendar: do the checks on a mild afternoon before the first night the forecast drops below about 10 degrees, because that is the night you will otherwise find out. Nothing in Ontario law tells a homeowner when to turn the heat on in their own house. The dates people half-remember are landlord rules, set city by city, and they are worth knowing because they also tell a tenant exactly what to ask for.

Two things stand out in that table. Mississauga dropped its seasonal dates in 2018 and now requires 20 degrees year-round, which is why a Mississauga tenant does not have to wait for September 15. And Toronto's own page notes that between September 15 and October 15 the weather can keep an apartment above 21 degrees without the heat on at all, which is the honest version of the same advice this page gives a homeowner: the furnace should be proven ready in September and needed in October.

The 8 checks, and what each one rules out

Run these in order, because each one is safe for a homeowner and each one eliminates a different family of first-cold-night failures. This is the furnace ready for winter checklist we walk customers through on the phone in September. Seven of the eight cost nothing. The eighth, the test firing, is the one that tells you whether the other seven worked.

The eight checks in the order they rule things out. Steps one to seven are free; step eight is the proof. Anything inside the cabinet is a technician's job.

On the filter, Natural Resources Canada's guidance is to change or clean it every three months or as it becomes loaded, and to keep return grilles and warm-air vents free of obstructions. What the first firing should sound and smell like

A gas furnace starts in a fixed sequence, and each stage makes its own sound, so standing beside it for the first cycle of the season tells you more than any other check on this page. The inducer fan comes on first, not the burners, and there is a deliberate pause of half a minute or more before you should see or hear flame. That pause is the furnace clearing its heat exchanger and proving the vent is open. It is not a fault.

Then the smell. A faint burnt-dust smell in the first ten to thirty minutes of the season is the summer's dust cooking off the heat exchanger and it clears on its own; open a window and let it. Two smells are different. Rotten egg, the odourant added to natural gas, means leave the house without touching switches and call Enbridge Gas or 911 from outside. Hot plastic or scorched wiring means switch the furnace off at its power switch and call for service, because an electrical smell does not clear on its own.

Safety

Everything on this page happens outside the burner compartment. Do not open the burner cover, do not touch the gas valve, do not bypass a switch that has shut the furnace down, and do not keep restarting a furnace that locks out. A furnace that shuts itself off three times in a row has found a fault and is protecting you from it.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, the Government of Ontario's instruction is to get everyone out of the home immediately and call 911 or your local emergency number from outside. Do not go back in to find the source. TSSA reports that about 65 per cent of carbon monoxide incidents in Ontario happen in homes, and the furnace, the water heater and an attached garage are the usual sources.

The carbon monoxide alarm rule that changed in 2026

Since January 1, 2026, an Ontario home with a fuel-burning appliance, a flue or a fireplace must have a carbon monoxide alarm adjacent to each sleeping area and on each storey that has no sleeping area, under an amendment to the Ontario Fire Code made by O. Reg. 87/25. Before that date the requirement was the sleeping-area alarm alone, which is why a great many Peel Region houses with a bedroom-hallway alarm and nothing in the basement, beside the furnace that actually burns the gas, are now one alarm short.

The regulation's own words are worth reading once, because they settle the arguments about where the alarm goes. Where a fuel-burning appliance, flue or fireplace is installed in a residential suite, a carbon monoxide alarm shall be installed adjacent to each sleeping area in the suite, and on each storey without a sleeping area in the suite.

O. Reg. 87/25 was filed June 4, 2025, and its subsection 96(2) brings the relevant sections into force on January 1, 2026. Ontario's carbon monoxide safety page carries the same instruction in plain language, along with the maintenance rules: test every alarm monthly with the button, replace batteries every year, replace the alarm itself according to the manufacturer's instructions, and have fuel-burning appliances, chimneys and vents cleaned and inspected by professionals every year before cold weather sets in.

So for a typical two-storey Mississauga or Brampton house with the furnace in the basement, the count is now three: one outside the upstairs bedrooms, one on the main floor, one in the basement. Buy alarms certified to CSA 6.19, which is the standard the Fire Code names, and if yours are sealed ten-year units, check the manufacture date rather than assuming. If it does not start: symptom, cause, and who handles it

Where the sequence stopped tells you what failed, and most first-of-season no-starts stop at stage one, before the furnace has done anything at all. Those are yours to fix. Anything past the inducer fan is usually a part inside the cabinet, and in Ontario the gas side of that cabinet belongs to a certified person.

One habit worth breaking: the furnace power switch is not a reset button to be flipped until something happens. Turning it off for thirty seconds and back on clears a lockout once. If the furnace locks out again on the next attempt, the fault is real, and every further restart puts unburned gas through a heat exchanger for nothing. Who is allowed to touch what

Ontario splits furnace work across credentials issued by different bodies, and for a gas furnace the one that matters is the gas technician certificate held by the person, backed by the fuels contractor registration held by the company. The eight checks on this page need neither. Everything past them does.

What the professional visit adds

The eight checks get a furnace ready for winter in the sense that it starts; they cannot see a heat exchanger crack, a burner running rich, a flame sensor two weeks from failing or a drain about to overflow, and those are what the fall visit is for. Natural Resources Canada's own list of what a contractor checks runs to gas connections, gas pressure, burner combustion and the heat exchanger, electrical connections and motor current, the condensate drain and every control.

The Government of Ontario puts the timing plainly: cleaned and inspected every year before cold weather sets in. How often that visit is really needed, what it includes and what it costs against a plan is its own decision, and it lives on our furnace servicing guide rather than here.

The possible downside of calling us: we install and service gas equipment, so an equipment answer is the one we are best placed to give. When should heat be turned on in Ontario?

There is no provincial date for a homeowner. In your own home, test the furnace on a mild day in late September and run it when the nights drop below about 10 degrees.

What turns on first on a furnace?

The inducer fan, a small motor at the top of the cabinet that clears the heat exchanger and proves the vent is open before any gas flows. Only after the pressure switch confirms that draft does the igniter glow, then the burners light, and the main blower starts about 30 to 90 seconds after flame. If your furnace goes quiet after that first whir, the sequence stopped at the vent or the igniter.

How long should it take for my furnace to kick on?

Expect flame within about 30 to 60 seconds of the thermostat calling, and warm air at the registers roughly a minute after that, because the blower is deliberately held off until the heat exchanger is warm. The pause before ignition is the inducer fan purging the exchanger and is normal. A furnace that takes several minutes, or that tries and stops repeatedly, has a fault in the ignition sequence.

Is it safe to run a furnace if it smells?

It depends on the smell. A faint burnt-dust smell in the first half hour of the season is summer dust cooking off the heat exchanger and clears on its own. The first group is yours; the second is a gas technician's.

How do I reboot my furnace?

Turn the power switch beside the furnace off, wait thirty seconds, and turn it back on. That clears a lockout once and the furnace will retry from the start of its sequence. Do it one time. If it locks out again, the fault is real, and each further restart pushes unburned gas through the exchanger for nothing. Do not open the burner compartment or bypass any switch to force it.

A furnace warranty in Ontario is not one document. It is three, written by two different companies, and the one homeowners discover too late is the heat exchanger clause. On Carrier equipment that clause is worth the difference between lifetime cover and twenty years, and it is decided by a registration form in the first 90 days. If your question is really about who pays the technician rather than who supplies the part, start with HVAC labour warranty in Ontario.

A furnace warranty in Ontario normally has three layers: manufacturer parts cover, a longer separate heat exchanger term, and a labour warranty from the contractor who installed it. What does a furnace warranty actually cover?

A furnace warranty covers three separate things written by two separate companies: the manufacturer supplies defective parts, the manufacturer supplies the heat exchanger under a longer term of its own, and the installing contractor supplies the labour for a period the contractor sets. Carrier states the split plainly on its Canadian homeowner FAQ: "Labor is provided by the dealer/contractor for a period of time as determined by them."

That single sentence is the source of most of the disappointment we see on service calls. A homeowner reads "10 year warranty" on a brochure, a control board fails in year six, and the part arrives free while the invoice still has a labour line on it. Nothing has gone wrong. The parts warranty did exactly what it says.

Why is the heat exchanger warranted separately?

The heat exchanger is warranted separately because it is the wall between combustion gases and the air you breathe, which makes it both the most expensive component in the furnace and the one with a safety consequence when it fails. Manufacturers give it its own term, usually far longer than the parts term.

Two practical things follow from that, and both matter more than the headline number.

First, a lifetime heat exchanger warranty is a parts warranty. It supplies the heat exchanger. It does not pay anyone to install it, and installing one is most of a day's work on a furnace that has to be largely dismantled to get at it. On a unit past a certain age we will usually price both paths honestly and let you choose. Second, the term is not the same on every furnace in a brand's range. A builder-grade unit and a top-tier unit from the same manufacturer can carry different heat exchanger terms. Read the certificate for the model you actually own rather than the number on a brochure for a different one.

Safety: a cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide question, not a warranty question

If a technician tells you the heat exchanger is cracked, the warranty conversation comes second. A failed heat exchanger can let combustion products, including carbon monoxide, into the air moving through your ducts. Carbon monoxide has no colour and no smell.

Ontario requires a working carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping area of every home with a fuel-burning appliance. If your alarm sounds, get everyone outside first, then call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line from outside the house. Do not go back in to investigate.

Do not open the furnace cabinet yourself to look, and do not keep running a furnace a technician has red-tagged. In Ontario, work on a gas appliance is for a TSSA-registered contractor and a certified gas technician, not a homeowner and not a general handyman.

What does registering within 90 days change?

On Carrier furnaces, registering within 90 days of installation doubles the parts term and turns a twenty year heat exchanger warranty into a lifetime one. Carrier's Canadian page for the Performance 96 gas furnace states it directly: the "parts limited warranty period is 5 years and heat exchanger warranty is reduced to 20-years if not registered within 90 days."

It is a form. It is free. It takes a few minutes and it needs three things: the model number, the serial number and the installation date. The model and serial are on the rating plate inside the furnace cabinet door, and the installation date is on your invoice.

Carrier's registration portal is at productregistration.carrier.com, linked from Carrier Canada's own warranty page. If you are not sure whether an existing furnace was ever registered, Carrier publishes a warranty lookup tool that answers it from the serial number.

Carrier does add one qualifier worth knowing: "Jurisdictions where warranty benefits cannot be conditioned on registration will receive the extended registered parts limited warranty and heat exchanger parts limited warranty period." Ontario is not named among those jurisdictions on the page, so the safe assumption here is that registration is required. Do not rely on being covered by an exception the manufacturer has not said applies to you.

What are Carrier's furnace warranty terms in Canada?

Carrier's published Canadian terms for the Performance 96 gas furnace are 10 years on parts and lifetime on the heat exchanger with timely registration, dropping to 5 years and 20 years without it, and coverage runs to the original owner in an owner-occupied residence.

Treat that table as the shape of the deal, not as your certificate. Terms vary by series and by model, and Carrier can change them. The document that binds is the warranty certificate that came with your furnace, and if you cannot find it, the serial number and the lookup tool will tell you what you have. Does a furnace warranty cover labour?

No. The manufacturer's warranty supplies parts, and labour comes from the installing contractor's own warranty or from a protection plan. Carrier says so itself: labour is provided by the dealer for a period the dealer determines.

That distinction is worth more than a paragraph, so it has a page of its own. What voids a furnace warranty in Ontario?

The things that most often cost Ontario homeowners their furnace warranty are installation by someone not registered to do gas work, missed annual maintenance, and a change of ownership nobody thought to check. None of them is exotic, and all three are visible to a technician who opens the cabinet.

Two of those deserve a sentence more. Sizing and venting are not defects, so a furnace that short-cycles itself to an early failure because it was oversized has no warranty claim; what furnace installation includes explains what a proper job looks like. And renting changes everything, because the rental agreement, not the manufacturer, decides who fixes what; see rent or buy a furnace.

What does Ontario law add on top of the warranty?

Ontario adds two protections that sit above whatever the manufacturer wrote: a licensing rule about who may touch the appliance, and a consumer-contract rule about what your repair agreement must say.

On licensing, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority is explicit: "Under Ontario law, furnaces and fuels-fired appliances must be maintained by TSSA-registered contractors." TSSA adds that "all registered contractors are required to hire TSSA certified gas technicians who have extensive training and are qualified to perform fuels work safely." This is not a manufacturer preference, it is the law, and it is also the exclusion that most often kills a claim. TSSA's own advice is to "verify the contractor's registration status using the convenient and easy-to-use lookup tool" before you engage anyone. Aire One Peel's fuels contractor registration is FS R0076624709, and you are welcome to look it up.

On contracts, Consumer Protection Ontario sets out that a home repair contract worth more than $50 CAD must be in writing and must describe the warranties that come with the work, that the final bill cannot exceed a written estimate by more than 10 per cent, and that a contract signed in your home carries a 10 calendar day cooling-off period. In practice that means a contractor who will not put a labour warranty in writing is not just being informal, they are leaving out something the contract is supposed to contain.

One more that applies to newer homes: if your house is under Tarion's new home warranty, the two year coverage includes defects in work or materials in the heating delivery and distribution systems. That is worth knowing because several national advice pages tell Ontario homeowners the opposite. If the house is less than two years old, check Tarion before you assume the manufacturer's warranty is your only route.

What happens to the warranty when the house is sold?

Carrier's published terms run to the original owner in an owner-occupied residence, so buying a house with a furnace already in it usually means a shorter remaining term than the previous owner had, not the same one. Carrier notes on its FAQ that the length "varies based on if you are the original purchasing owner, subsequent owner, or if the product was installed in a single-family or multi-family home or commercial application."

The practical move when you buy a house in Peel Region: find the rating plate inside the furnace door, photograph the model and serial numbers, and run them through Carrier's warranty lookup before you need it. Is a protection plan worth it on a furnace?

A protection plan is worth considering in the years when the parts warranty is still running but the labour warranty has expired, because that gap is exactly what the plan fills. On a registered Carrier furnace that gap can be eight years long.

The honest downside. A plan is a monthly payment for a repair that may never happen, and on a furnace still inside both its parts warranty and its labour warranty you are paying mainly for the annual maintenance and the waived diagnostic. Silver caps repair cover at $750 CAD a year, which is not a blank cheque: a major component plus several hours of labour can exceed it. If your furnace is new, well installed and registered, the case for a plan is weakest in exactly the first year or two when people are most often sold one.

How do I make a furnace warranty claim?

Cold air at the registers is the symptom that sends most homeowners looking for the warranty certificate. What happens next depends on who you call.

You start with a contractor, not with the manufacturer. Carrier administers warranty through its dealer network and does not dispatch technicians to homes; its own FAQ tells homeowners to "contact your dealer or installer for detailed information." Your contractor diagnoses the fault, confirms it is a covered defect and orders the part through the distributor.

And keep the invoice for the repair itself, because a replacement part is normally warranted only for the remainder of the original term rather than starting a fresh one. After that, three habits protect what you have: use a TSSA-registered contractor for everything, service it once a year, and keep every invoice. The exclusions that actually get used against homeowners are not obscure legal traps, they are those three things going missing.

And be clear-eyed about what a warranty is not. It is not a service contract. Parts come free, technicians do not, and the years between the end of your labour warranty and the end of your parts warranty are the exposure. Whether you close that gap with a protection plan or by keeping a repair fund is a reasonable question either way, and anyone who tells you there is only one right answer is selling something.

Short answer

A heat pump warranty in Ontario has three parts: a manufacturer parts warranty that Carrier sets at 10 years with registration inside 90 days and 5 years without, a compressor promise that on three Infinity models becomes a 10 year unit replacement, and a contractor labour warranty of roughly one to two years.

Two things are worth saying plainly about that table. The first is that the Consumer Choice trade, five parts years swapped for three labour years, is the better deal for most homeowners, because labour is the line that actually gets billed. The second is that it "is available only if the installing dealer/contractor has elected to participate in the Consumer Choice warranty program", so ask whether the company quoting you is enrolled, and ask us the same question rather than assuming. Register at Carrier's product registration portal, and check an existing unit by serial number with Carrier's warranty lookup.

Is the heat pump compressor covered, and what is unit replacement?

The compressor is covered as part of the parts warranty on every model, and on three Carrier Infinity models it is covered by something better. Carrier's 27VNA1 page describes a "10-year unit replacement limited warranty for compressor failures only, to original purchaser with timely registration, except where restricted by jurisdiction", and Carrier's Canadian heat pump listing limits that to "Models 27VNA0, 27VNA1 and 27VNA3 only."

The practical difference is large. On most equipment a failed compressor means a compressor arrives and a technician spends most of a day fitting it into a system that is already ten years old. On those three models it can mean a new outdoor unit instead. In both cases the labour is separate, and in both cases the refrigerant is yours to pay for.

Do cold-climate heat pumps get a different warranty?

No. A cold-climate heat pump carries the same terms as the rest of its series; what changes is how hard the machine works to earn them. Carrier states that the 27VNA1 maintains "100% heating capacity down to 0ºF", which is about -18 C, and supports heating operation down to -23 F, about -31 C, with cooling capability up to 125 F, about 52 C.

Those numbers are the reason registration and maintenance matter more on a heat pump than on anything else in the house. The unit heats in January and cools in July, so it accumulates roughly double the run hours of an air conditioner, and it defrosts, which cycles the outdoor coil, the fan motor and the defrost control far more often. More cycles on covered parts is exactly the situation where the difference between 10 years and 5 stops being theoretical. What does Ontario add on top of the manufacturer's warranty?

Ontario adds a layer of law that decides who is allowed to touch your heat pump at all, and it is the part of this subject that no national or United States guide will tell you. Refrigerant handling here is a certified job by statute, not a matter of the manufacturer's preference.

Where this applies. Every rule above is provincial, so it works identically in Mississauga, Brampton, Etobicoke, Milton, Georgetown, Caledon and Bolton. What changes by address is the escalation path: refrigerant certification is checked against one provincial card, TSSA registration against one provincial registry, and Consumer Protection Ontario takes complaints province wide. There is no municipal version of any of it, which is precisely why a contractor cannot tell you the rules are different in your town.

Do not let anyone open the refrigerant circuit without the card: refrigerant causes cold burns and displaces oxygen in an enclosed space, and in Ontario handling it without certification is an offence under O. Reg. 463/10. If your heat pump is paired with a gas furnace and you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call the utility emergency line and 911 from outside before you call anyone about a warranty.

A warranty claim starts with a diagnosis, and the diagnosis is labour. That is the line the manufacturer does not pay after year one.

What voids a heat pump warranty?

Most denied claims come down to how the unit was installed, who has worked on it since, and whether it has been maintained. None of those are exotic, and all of them are visible to a technician years later.

Does a heat pump warranty cover labour?

The manufacturer's parts warranty does not, with one exception: Carrier's Consumer Choice option, where a participating dealer can offer three years of labour in place of five years of parts. Otherwise labour comes from the installing contractor, and in Ontario that is typically one to two years.

Some Ontario companies publish considerably longer terms, and that is a real advantage worth pricing: AtlasCare, for one, advertises five years covering parts and labour on everything it installs. Do rebates change a heat pump warranty?

No, and the two run on opposite timetables, which is the only thing about rebates that belongs on a warranty page. The Home Renovation Savings program, delivered by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy, states that "Pre-approval is mandatory. Installations done before approval are not eligible for rebates", so the rebate step comes before the work, while manufacturer registration comes after it, inside 90 days. Meeting one has never excused missing the other, and the amounts and rules change, so read the program terms directly rather than a contractor's summary of them. Is a protection plan worth it on a heat pump?

The gap is labour from year two onward on a machine whose parts are covered to year ten and which runs all year. That is a longer and busier gap than a furnace or an air conditioner leaves, which is the honest case for buying cover rather than a sales line.

The possible downside, plainly: our published protection plans describe heating and cooling equipment in Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers, and they do not name heat pumps anywhere. A heat pump is both your heating and your cooling in one box, so which tier it falls under, and whether it is covered at all, is a question to get answered in writing before you subscribe rather than after. Ask us, and if the answer is no, price a third party extended warranty against it instead of buying a plan that may not apply. How do I make a heat pump warranty claim in Ontario?

Call the contractor who installed it first, because manufacturer warranties are processed through dealers rather than direct to homeowners. Have five things ready before you call.

The model and serial number from the rating plate on the outdoor unit.
The installation invoice and date, which is what every term runs from.
Proof of registration, or a warranty lookup result, so the 10 year term is not in dispute.
Your maintenance records, which answer the neglect exclusion before it is raised.
Whether anyone else has opened the refrigerant circuit, and whether they held the certification, because that is the first thing a manufacturer will ask about.

The technician diagnoses the fault and, if it is a covered defect, orders the part through Carrier. You pay for labour, refrigerant and consumables unless a labour warranty or plan covers them, and a replacement part normally carries only the remainder of the original term rather than a fresh one. How long is a heat pump warranty in Ontario?

On Carrier equipment the parts warranty is 10 years if the unit is registered within 90 days of installation and 5 years if it is not. The contractor's labour warranty is separate and typically runs one to two years, or three years where the dealer participates in Carrier's Consumer Choice programme.

Is the heat pump compressor covered under warranty?

Yes, as part of the manufacturer's parts warranty on every model. On Carrier's Infinity 27VNA0, 27VNA1 and 27VNA3 a compressor failure within 10 years qualifies for unit replacement rather than a compressor swap, provided the unit was registered on time and you are the original owner.

Final verdict

Register the unit inside 90 days, keep the invoice where you can find it, use certified contractors only, and get the labour term written on the quote before you sign. Those four things cost nothing and they decide almost everything about what a failure will cost you in year seven. If your heat pump is already in and you do not know its registration status, stop reading and go and look it up; that is the highest-value ten minutes available to you today.

Fifteen years on the heat exchanger, five on parts, one on labour. Here is what shortens each of those, and what Ontario adds on top.

The Navien tankless water heater warranty is really three warranties with three different lengths, and the longest one is not the one that gets used. This guide sets out what Navien Canada publishes for the NPE-2 series, what shortens each term, what voids the whole thing, and what Ontario law adds on top. Short answer

Navien Canada publishes 15 years on the heat exchanger, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labour for an NPE-2 series tankless water heater in a standard residential installation, running from the date of original installation. Uncontrolled recirculation, combi use and commercial use all shorten those terms.

Licensed installation, regular maintenance and buying through an authorized dealer are conditions, not suggestions. The labour side is explained in full here.

Read down the heat exchanger column of the Navien tankless water heater warranty and the spread is the whole story: the same unit carries anywhere from 3 to 15 years of cover on its most expensive component, and nothing about the box on the wall decides which. How it is plumbed and what it is used for decide it.

What does each part of the Navien warranty actually cover?

Navien describes its coverage as a limited warranty that "covers labor, parts and the heat exchanger", and those three are separate promises with separate clocks. Knowing which clock has run out is what tells you whether a repair produces an invoice.

That last row is the one people misread. Navien states the replacement component "will be warranted only for the unexpired portion of the original component's applicable warranty period." A warranty claim does not restart the clock on anything.

What is the difference between controlled and uncontrolled recirculation?

Controlled recirculation means the pump runs on a schedule, a timer, a demand button or a sensor, and it keeps the full 15 year heat exchanger term. Uncontrolled recirculation means the pump runs continuously, and Navien cuts the heat exchanger to 5 years and parts to 3. It is the same hardware and the same house. The only difference is whether something tells the pump to stop.

Recirculation exists so you are not standing at the tap waiting for hot water, and that is a genuinely good reason to want it. The cost of getting it wrong is ten years of heat exchanger cover, on the single most expensive component in the unit. If you want recirculation, ask for it in writing as a controlled setup, and ask your installer to note the control method on the invoice. If your unit is already installed and you do not know which you have, that is worth a phone call before it is worth anything else.

What voids a Navien tankless water heater warranty?

Navien's Canadian warranty pages list the exclusions, and four of them account for almost every denied claim we hear about: where the unit was bought, who installed it, whether it was installed to the manual, and whether it has been maintained.

The honest version of the online-purchase point: buying the unit yourself online is usually cheaper up front, sometimes by several hundred dollars, and that saving is real. What you are trading for it is the entire 15 year heat exchanger term. If the unit lasts, you win. If the heat exchanger fails in year 7, you pay for a part that would have been free. That is the trade, stated plainly, and it is yours to make.

How hard is the water where you live, really?

The Region of Peel publishes hardness for the South Peel system, which serves Mississauga, Brampton and south Caledon, at 120 to 130 mg/L as calcium carbonate, or roughly 7.0 to 7.6 grains per US gallon, and the Region classifies that as moderately hard rather than hard. That matters, because scale is a named Navien exclusion and "your water is hard" is the easiest thing in this trade to say without checking.

Moderately hard is not nothing. Scale still forms in a heat exchanger, descaling is still the maintenance that matters most, and Navien still excludes mineral damage. What moderately hard means is that on municipal water in Mississauga or Brampton, a softener is a comfort and appliance-life decision rather than a warranty rescue. On a rural well, test first and decide from the result.

Leave first, call from outside: a tankless water heater is a gas combustion appliance. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house and call the utility emergency line and 911 from outside before you call anyone about a warranty. In Ontario, work on fuel-fired appliances must be done by a TSSA-registered fuels contractor employing certified gas technicians, and never by the homeowner.

Navien excludes failures caused by lack of maintenance and by mineral build-up. The service invoice is what answers that objection years later.

What maintenance keeps the Navien tankless water heater warranty valid?

The Navien tankless water heater warranty excludes failures caused by "failure to perform regular maintenance" and points to the User's Operation Manual for the routine, but the warranty page itself does not print a flushing interval. So the honest answer is that your manual sets the requirement and your water and usage set the frequency. These five steps are the ones that matter on any tankless unit.

Descale the heat exchanger through the isolation valves that should have been fitted at installation. If your unit has no isolation valves, that is worth fixing before anything else, because without them descaling means breaking into the plumbing.
Clean the inlet water filter, which catches the debris that would otherwise reach the heat exchanger.
Clean the air intake filter so the burner gets the air the manual assumes it has.
Check the condensate drain and the neutralizer, since a blocked drain on a condensing appliance backs up into the unit.
Have venting and gas pressure inspected by a licensed technician, which on gas equipment in Ontario means a TSSA-registered contractor.

We have not published a descaling interval for Peel Region, so we are not going to invent one here. Ask us, or ask whoever installed your unit, for the interval they recommend for your water and your household size, and get it in writing alongside the maintenance record. Does the Navien warranty cover labour?

Yes. The Navien tankless water heater warranty includes one year of labour from installation, on every application in the table above. Navien is unusual in including any labour at all, and it is worth crediting: most manufacturers of furnaces and air conditioners include none. But one year against a five year parts term means four years where the part arrives free and the technician does not.

After year one, labour comes from the installing contractor's own warranty, which in Ontario typically runs one to two years, or from an extended warranty. We have not published our labour term for tankless installations, so ask us for it in writing on the quote, and ask every other contractor you are considering for theirs the same way. Some Ontario contractors publish considerably longer terms: AtlasCare, for one, advertises five years covering parts and labour on everything it installs, which is longer than the norm and worth pricing against. Do I need to register a Navien water heater?

The Navien tankless water heater warranty does not set a registration deadline as a condition of the terms above, but it does require the installation date, and it says that "The date of original installation must be provided to Navien, and upon request, proof of the original installation date must also be provided." Navien provides a registration form on its Canadian site.

So registration is not the trap that Carrier's 90 day window is on furnaces and air conditioners, but the paperwork still is. Ask your installer, in writing, whether they registered the unit and when, and keep that confirmation with the installation invoice. That invoice is what proves the date years later, and it is the single cheapest thing you can do to protect a 15 year term.

How do I make a Navien warranty claim in Ontario?

Call the contractor who installed the unit first, because Navien warranty service is delivered through licensed contractors rather than direct to homeowners. Have four things in front of you when you call.

The model and serial number from the rating plate on the unit.
The original installation invoice, which establishes the date every term runs from.
Your maintenance records, which answer the lack-of-maintenance exclusion before it is raised.
Whether the unit has recirculation, and how it is controlled, because that decides which row of the table applies to you.

The technician diagnoses the fault and, if it is a covered defect, obtains the part through Navien. Inside the first year the labour is covered too. After that, labour is billed unless your installer's own warranty still runs. If we did not install your unit we still service Navien tankless heaters: book water heater repair or call 905-564-8545. Is a protection plan worth it on a tankless water heater?

The gap in the Navien warranty is labour from year two onward, on a unit whose parts are covered to year five and whose heat exchanger is covered to year fifteen. Something has to fill that gap, and there are only three candidates.

The possible downside, plainly: our own protection plans do not help a tankless owner. The Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers published on our site cover furnace and air conditioner repairs and inspections, and no water heater tier is listed. If tankless labour cover is what you want, ask us whether it can be arranged rather than assuming a plan buys it, and price a third party extended warranty against the answer. Navien Canada also links to an optional extended warranty through a third party administrator; we have not read those terms, so we make no claim about them here.

How long is the Navien tankless warranty in Canada?

For an NPE-2 series residential unit with standard or controlled recirculation, Navien Canada publishes 15 years on the heat exchanger, 5 years on parts and 1 year on labour, running from the date of original installation. Uncontrolled recirculation, combi use and commercial use all shorten the heat exchanger and parts terms.

Does the Navien warranty cover labour?

Yes, for one year from installation, on every application Navien lists. After that first year, the labour to fit a covered part is billed unless the installing contractor's own labour warranty still runs or you hold an extended warranty. Navien including any labour at all is more than most furnace and air conditioner makers offer.

Does recirculation shorten the Navien warranty?

Uncontrolled recirculation does. If the pump runs continuously, Navien cuts the heat exchanger term from 15 years to 5 and parts from 5 years to 3. Controlled recirculation, where a timer, demand button or sensor switches the pump, keeps the full terms. It is the control method, not the pump itself, that decides.

Is the Navien warranty shorter for combi or commercial use?

Yes. In a commercial or combi application the heat exchanger is covered for 8 years with standard or controlled recirculation, and 3 years with uncontrolled recirculation. Parts follow at 5 years and 3 years respectively. Labour stays at one year in every case.

What voids a Navien tankless warranty?

Buying through the internet or an unauthorized supplier, installation by a non-licensed installer, installation that does not follow the manual or breaches code, failure to perform regular maintenance, damage from hard water and mineral build-up, modifications or non-Navien components, and operation in a corrosive atmosphere.

Do I have to flush a Navien tankless heater to keep the warranty?

Navien excludes failures caused by lack of maintenance and by mineral build-up, so descaling is part of keeping the warranty intact. The warranty page itself prints no interval and points to the User's Operation Manual, so follow the manual, match the frequency to your water and usage, and keep every service invoice as proof.

Do I need to register a Navien water heater?

Navien Canada's warranty page sets no registration deadline as a condition, but it requires the date of original installation and states that proof of it must be provided on request. Navien offers a registration form on its Canadian site. Register promptly, ask your installer in writing whether they did it, and keep the installation invoice either way.

Final verdict

Treat the Navien tankless water heater warranty as three clocks, not one number, and know which row of the table you are on before you need it. Buy through an authorized dealer, have it installed by a TSSA-registered contractor, keep the installation invoice where you can find it, and if you want recirculation, insist it is set up as controlled. Those four decisions are worth more than any extended warranty you can buy afterwards, and three of them cost nothing.

The part is free. The technician is not. Here is why those are two different warranties, and what Ontario law makes your contractor put in writing.

We hear the same sentence a few times a week: but it is under warranty. It usually is, for the part. The labour to take the failed part out and put the new one in is a separate promise, written by the company that installed your system, and it is normally much shorter than the parts term. This guide explains what an HVAC labour warranty covers in Ontario, how long yours is likely to run, and what Ontario rules let you insist goes on the quote. Short answer

In Ontario, the manufacturer's warranty on a furnace, air conditioner, heat pump or water heater almost always covers parts only, and the labour to install those parts is a separate warranty written by the contractor who installed the system, typically one to two years long.

A few manufacturers add a short labour term of their own, and an extended warranty or a protection plan can buy HVAC labour warranty cover back once the original term lapses. Both have to be arranged before you need them.

Why does the manufacturer's warranty not cover labour?

Because the manufacturer did not install your system and does not employ the technician who arrives at your door. Its warranty is a promise about the product: if a covered part fails from a defect inside the term, the maker supplies a replacement part. Carrier's Canadian homeowner FAQ says it in one line: "Labor is provided by the dealer/contractor for a period of time as determined by them."

That single sentence is the whole reason a covered repair still produces an invoice. Two companies are involved, they wrote two different documents, and only one of them is in your basement.

What does an HVAC labour warranty actually cover?

An HVAC labour warranty is the installing company's commitment that if a covered part fails inside the labour term, it will send a technician and not bill you for the time to replace it. What it does not cover is where the surprises live, and refrigerant is the most common one.

How long is a typical HVAC labour warranty in Ontario?

There is no legislated minimum HVAC labour warranty in Ontario, so one to two years from the installation date is simply what the market settled on. Some contractors offer longer terms as a selling feature, some charge extra for them, and a few include none at all. The manufacturer's parts term runs far longer, and the gap between the two is the part of the deal almost nobody reads.

Read the Carrier rows together and the shape of the decision appears. Registering the unit inside 90 days is worth five years of parts cover, and it is free. Where a dealer participates in Carrier's Consumer Choice programme, you can trade five of those parts years for three years of labour instead, which is the better trade for most homeowners because labour is the line that actually gets billed.

On a Carrier furnace the heat exchanger can be covered for life while the HVAC labour warranty on replacing it runs one year. The two terms are written by two different companies.

Manufacturer warranty, labour warranty, extended warranty or protection plan?

There are four separate things that can pay for an HVAC repair in Ontario, and homeowners routinely believe they have one when they have another. Two arrive with the equipment, and two have to be bought.

What does Ontario law actually give you on a labour warranty?

Ontario sets no minimum HVAC labour warranty term, but it does control how the term reaches you: any home repair or renovation contract worth more than $50 CAD must be in writing, and Consumer Protection Ontario states that the contract has to include a description of the warranties. That turns "get it in writing" from advice into a requirement on the contractor, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.

One correction is worth making, because it circulates widely in Ontario. A well-read contractor article tells homeowners that Tarion coverage does not extend to HVAC equipment. Tarion's own coverage page says the two year warranty "Covers defects in work or materials in the electrical, plumbing and heating delivery and distribution systems", and the one year warranty requires the home to be free from defects in material.

That coverage runs against the builder of a new home, not against the contractor who sold you a replacement furnace years later, so it will not help most readers. If your house is under seven years old and the original system is failing, it is worth a call to Tarion before it is worth a call to us.

Where this applies. Every rule in the table above is provincial, so an HVAC labour warranty works the same way in Mississauga, Brampton, Etobicoke, Milton, Georgetown, Caledon and Bolton. What changes by address is who you escalate to. Consumer Protection Ontario takes complaints province wide, TSSA registration is checked on one provincial registry, and Tarion claims run through the builder named on your new home enrolment, which is why two neighbours in the same subdivision can get different answers from the same set of rules.

Never let warranty status decide a gas safety question: if you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the house first and call the utility emergency line and 911 from outside. Do not wait to find out who pays. In Ontario, work on fuel-fired appliances must be done by a TSSA-registered fuels contractor employing certified gas technicians, and a cheaper unregistered repair can void the manufacturer's warranty on top of the risk it creates.

Is an extended HVAC warranty worth it?

An extended warranty is worth considering when the equipment has a long parts term and a short HVAC labour warranty, which describes almost every furnace, air conditioner and heat pump sold in Ontario. The value is entirely in the detail, so five questions decide it before the price does.

Who backs it. A manufacturer plan or a third party administrator survives the contractor closing. A contractor's own promise may not.
Whether it covers labour, parts or both, and whether refrigerant and recovery are named as included rather than left out.
Whether annual maintenance is required, and whether you have to produce the invoices to prove it.
Whether it transfers if you sell the house, and whether a fee applies.
The claim process. Who you telephone at 8 pm in February, and who pays the technician on the night.

Navien Canada links to an optional extended warranty through a third party administrator on its own site. We have not read those terms, so we make no claim about them here. If you are considering one, get the contract before you buy it, not after.

How is a protection plan different from an HVAC labour warranty?

A protection plan is a subscription rather than a one time purchase, and it bundles annual maintenance with repair coverage instead of only paying out when something breaks. Reliance Home Comfort and the other large Ontario providers run the same model at larger scale, and if you want one company covering water heater, furnace and air conditioner on a single account, they do that better than we do. That is a real advantage and worth pricing against ours.

Our own protection plans run Bronze, Silver and Gold on heating, cooling or both. Every tier includes an annual inspection with a gas and carbon monoxide safety check, live support around the clock, and no dispatch, truck or diagnostic fees. Silver covers all parts and labour up to $750 CAD a year on repairs to the covered system, Gold up to $1,000 CAD a year with no deductible, and the combined Gold plan raises that ceiling to $1,500 CAD across furnace and air conditioner together.

The possible downside, plainly: Gold Heating at $28.99 CAD a month costs $347.88 CAD a year against a $1,000 CAD annual repair ceiling, and a plan builds no equity. If your system is two years old and still inside both its parts term and its labour term, you are mostly buying the annual inspection, and the honest advice is Bronze or nothing until the labour term lapses. The plans earn their keep in years three to twelve, when the part is still covered and the labour is not.

What if the company that installed my system has closed?

Your manufacturer parts warranty survives, because it belongs to the equipment rather than to the installer, and any properly licensed dealer for that brand can process the parts claim. The HVAC labour warranty normally does not survive, because it was a promise from a company that no longer exists. That is the strongest argument for choosing a manufacturer-backed labour option or a third party administered extended warranty on a large purchase, rather than relying on the installer still trading in year six.

Bring the original invoice, the warranty certificate and the model and serial numbers to whoever you call next. Carrier publishes a warranty lookup tool that will confirm the term from the serial number. For gas equipment, confirm that the new company is a TSSA-registered fuels contractor before booking, because unregistered work can cost you the parts warranty as well. Does a labour warranty transfer when I sell my house?

Usually not, and you have to ask rather than assume. Most contractor HVAC labour warranties are written to the original purchaser, and Carrier states that its registered coverage runs "to the original owner on eligible equipment for eligible residential applications", with the length varying depending on whether you are the original or a subsequent owner. If you are buying a house, ask the seller for the equipment invoices, the warranty certificates and the maintenance records, then check the serial number against the manufacturer's lookup tool rather than trusting the listing.

What should I ask before signing an HVAC quote in Ontario?

Ask these nine questions and get the answers written on the quote itself, not promised in conversation, because Ontario's rules already entitle you to have the warranties described in the contract.

How long is your labour warranty, and what does it exclude? Get the number and the exclusions in the same sentence.
How long is the manufacturer parts warranty, does it require registration, and who registers it? On Carrier equipment the deadline is 90 days and the difference is five years against ten.
Is there a manufacturer labour option, and are you enrolled? Carrier's Consumer Choice programme only exists where the dealer has elected to participate.
Does the labour warranty cover diagnostics, return trips and refrigerant? Refrigerant is the usual exclusion.
Is the warranty tied to me or to the house? Carrier's stated coverage runs to the original owner.
Are you a TSSA-registered fuels contractor, and what is the registration number? Ours is FS R0076624709, and you can check any contractor on the TSSA public registry.
What maintenance do you require to keep the labour warranty valid? Skipped maintenance is a common reason a claim is refused.
What is the claim process out of hours? Ask what happens at 8 pm on a February Sunday, specifically.
Do you offer a protection plan, and what does it cost after year one? The renewal price matters more than the introductory one.

How we know this

Every parts term and HVAC labour warranty figure in the tables above was read directly from the manufacturer's own Canadian page on August 27, 2026, not from a summary. The sample is four manufacturer documents: the Carrier Canada homeowner FAQ, the Carrier 26TPA8 air conditioner page, the Carrier 59TP6 gas furnace page and the Navien NPE-A2 warranty page. Every regulatory statement was read from Consumer Protection Ontario, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority or Tarion on the same day.

No percentage appears anywhere on this page, because a base of four documents is far below the threshold where a percentage means anything. Two things we deliberately do not claim: we do not state our own standard labour term here, because it is not yet published anywhere we can point you to, and we do not summarise the Navien third party extended warranty, because we have not read its contract.

Does an HVAC warranty cover labour in Ontario?

Usually not. The manufacturer's warranty normally covers replacement parts only, and the labour to fit them comes from the installing contractor's own HVAC labour warranty, typically one to two years from the installation date. After that term ends, labour is paid out of pocket unless you hold an extended warranty or a protection plan.

Is there a legal minimum labour warranty in Ontario?

No minimum HVAC labour warranty term is set in Ontario. What Ontario does require is that a home repair contract worth more than $50 CAD be in writing and that it describe the warranties, so the term you were promised has to appear on the paperwork. If a labour term is not written on the quote or invoice, assume it does not exist.

Do any HVAC manufacturers include labour in the warranty?

Some do, briefly. Navien Canada includes one year of labour on residential NPE-A2 tankless units alongside five years of parts. Carrier offers a five year parts plus three year labour option in place of its ten year parts term, chosen within 90 days of installation and only where the installing dealer participates in its Consumer Choice programme.

What is the difference between an extended warranty and a protection plan?

An extended warranty is a one time purchase that lengthens repair coverage past the standard terms. A protection plan is a monthly subscription that usually adds an annual maintenance inspection and waives dispatch and diagnostic fees, with repair coverage capped at a yearly limit. One pays when something breaks; the other also pays to keep it from breaking.

Who pays for refrigerant on a warranty repair?

The homeowner, in almost every case. Refrigerant and the recovery work around it are named exclusions in most manufacturer warranties and most contractor labour warranties, so a covered coil or compressor replacement still produces an invoice. Check whether your protection plan agreement includes it, because that is the one place it sometimes is included.

Can another contractor do warranty work on my system?

For the manufacturer's parts warranty, yes, provided they are a dealer for that brand and properly licensed, and TSSA-registered for gas equipment. For the original installer's HVAC labour warranty, normally no: that promise was made by one company and does not follow the equipment to anyone else.

Does skipping annual maintenance void the HVAC labour warranty?

It can. Most HVAC labour warranties and protection plans exclude failures caused by neglect, and some require documented proof of annual service before they will settle a claim. Keep the maintenance invoices with the original installation paperwork, because the invoice is the proof, not your memory of the visit.

Final verdict

Treat the parts term and the HVAC labour warranty as two separate numbers, and get the second one written on the quote before you sign, because Ontario's rules already say it belongs there. Register the equipment inside 90 days, keep the maintenance invoices, and decide on extended cover or a protection plan while the choice is still open rather than on the day the compressor stops. If a contractor will not put that term in writing, that answer is itself the answer.

Three contractors walk through the same basement in the same week and come back with three prices. One is eleven hundred dollars below the others and the homeowner assumes somebody is being greedy. Usually nobody is. The cheap quote is short: it is missing the permit, or the venting change, or the coil that has to match, and those items do not disappear, they arrive later as a change order. This guide is about reading the three sheets side by side. For the price bands themselves, our new furnace cost guide is the number to work from.

Short answer

Two furnace quotes for the same house differ mainly in what they leave out, not in the price of the furnace. Compare them line by line on model and AFUE, how the size was determined, venting, condensate, thermostat, duct transitions, the building permit, old unit removal, and the labour warranty in years.

The cheapest sheet is often the shortest sheet. A quote that omits the permit and the venting change is not a discount, it is a deferral.

Compare furnace quotes: why two prices for the same house differ by thousands

Because the furnace is rarely the variable. Two contractors quoting the same two-stage condensing model are buying it at similar cost, so a gap of two thousand dollars is almost always sitting in the work around it: what the venting has to become, whether the indoor coil still fits, whether the electrical panel can take the circuit, and whether the permit and the disposal are on the sheet or waiting to surprise you. The table below is the map. It carries no invented dollar figures, because the only one of these with a published price is the permit.

The furnace is the easy part. Venting, transitions and the coil match are where two quotes for the same model stop agreeing.

What should a complete furnace quote include?

Eight lines. Compare furnace quotes on these and nothing else at first: if one sheet answers all eight and a rival answers four, they are not competing on price, they are describing different jobs. Print this and mark each sheet.

Model number and AFUE, written out. Not high efficiency Carrier.
Heating capacity in BTU per hour, and how it was determined. A heat loss calculation done inside the house, not floor area arithmetic done on the driveway.
Blower type: single speed, multi speed, or a variable speed electronically commutated motor. This is most of the comfort difference between tiers.
Venting plan, including what happens to any appliance that shared the old chimney.
Condensate handling, thermostat, filter cabinet and duct transitions: each marked included or extra.
Building permit, with who files it and what it costs.
Removal and disposal of the old furnace, and protection for floors and stairs.
Warranty in three parts: parts, heat exchanger, and the installer's own labour warranty in years. Ask who registers the manufacturer warranty and by when, because an unregistered warranty is a shorter warranty.

One question is worth asking every contractor who visits: what would a cold climate heat pump paired with this furnace cost, and does it change the rebate picture? In a gas heated home the answer is usually that it does not change it much, and that is a useful thing to hear from someone who could have sold you the bigger job. Does the efficiency tier explain the gap?

Partly, and less than most quotes imply. Canada's Energy Efficiency Regulations set the floor for a standard residential gas furnace at 95 per cent AFUE for units manufactured on or after July 3, 2019, which is why the 80 per cent mid-efficiency furnace your parents had is not on anyone's price list. What almost every furnace guide gets wrong is that the regulation still carries a separate item permitting an 80 per cent AFUE non-condensing furnace as a replacement in a defined case. It is rare in Peel Region, it is not what you want in a normal basement, and it is worth knowing exists if a quote looks unusually low.

Above the floor, the tiers are about comfort rather than fuel. Natural Resources Canada states that an ENERGY STAR certified furnace running on gas uses about 6 per cent less energy than a standard model, and that certification requires a blower that varies its speed rather than cycling on and off. That is the honest frame: buy the higher tier for quieter, steadier heat and a better blower, and treat the fuel saving as a bonus rather than a payback calculation. Was the furnace sized, or guessed?

This is the single question that separates a professional quote from a fast one, and it costs nothing to ask. Residential heating equipment in Canada is sized by a heat loss and heat gain calculation to CSA F280:12 (R2025), the standard titled Determining the required capacity of residential space heating and cooling appliances, and the Ontario Building Code requires heating capacity to be determined in accordance with it. Floor area alone is not a calculation. Insulation levels, window area and orientation, air tightness, ceiling heights and duct layout all move the answer for two houses with identical square footage.

An oversized furnace is the common outcome of a guess, and it is worse than a slightly small one. It short cycles, wears its ignition components faster, and heats the room with the thermostat while the far bedroom stays cold. If nobody walks the house, opens the panel, or asks about insulation before naming a capacity, that is not sizing. Our furnace size guide explains what the calculation actually measures.

Which approvals belong on the quote, and who may do the work?

Two things are not optional in Ontario: the municipal building permit where one is triggered, and the requirement that fuels work be done by a registered contractor. The City of Mississauga lists both "Furnace replacement that's of a higher efficiency than existing" and "Furnace ducts being altered" among the work requiring a building permit, which in practice catches nearly every mid-efficiency to condensing replacement in the city. The 2026 fee for a house is $244.00 CAD, and Mississauga's own document list asks for heat loss calculations and an HVAC drawing only when ducts are being altered, plus a Residential Furnace Replacement Form in every case.

Building permits are municipal, so the fee schedule changes at the city line even though the furnace does not. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority states that fuels fired appliances must be maintained by TSSA-registered contractors, and that registered contractors are required to hire TSSA-certified gas technicians. You can check any company yourself before signing, on TSSA's public Find a Registered Fuels Contractor tool. Our own registration is FS R0076624709. The correct language matters if you are reading a quote closely: a company is a registered fuels contractor, a person is a certified gas technician, and nobody in Ontario is TSSA-licensed. The carbon monoxide rule changed on January 1, 2026

Ontario extended its carbon monoxide alarm requirement this year, and almost no furnace guide has caught up. A home with a fuel-burning appliance has always needed an alarm adjacent to each sleeping area. As of January 1, 2026 an alarm is required on every storey of the home, including storeys with no bedrooms. A new furnace is a fuel-burning appliance, so this applies to the house the moment the quote is signed, whatever the quote says about it.

Ask for the alarms in writing: the Ontario Fire Code requirement now covers every storey of a home with a fuel-burning appliance, an attached garage, or a fireplace. A contractor replacing your furnace is the right person to tell you where yours have to go, and a good quote says so. Alarms are inexpensive; a bad install with a cracked heat exchanger is not.

If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside first and call from outside. Do not go back in to open windows or hunt for the source. Gas work, venting and combustion testing belong to a TSSA-certified gas technician, never to a homeowner with a screwdriver.

Is there a rebate that belongs on a furnace quote?

Not for the furnace itself. The Home Renovation Savings Program, run by Enbridge Gas with Save on Energy, publishes its eligible upgrades openly and a gas furnace does not appear anywhere on the list. If a quote shows a furnace rebate line, ask which program and read the program page yourself before you count on it.

Two numbers on that table are commonly published wrong. The smart thermostat rebate is $100 CAD, increased from $75 CAD, and Save on Energy prints the old figure struck through beside the new one; older Enbridge page descriptions still carry $75 CAD, which is where most contractor guides copied it from. And the heat pump rebate for a gas heated home is capped at $2,000 CAD, not the $7,500 CAD that applies only to homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood. Gas, propane or electric: does the fuel change how you read the quote?

It changes which lines you scrutinise. On natural gas, which is the default across Peel Region, the venting plan and the chimney question are the lines that hide money. On propane, common in Caledon, rural Milton and parts of Halton Hills, the same condensing appliance is configured differently, so ask for the propane conversion kit, the regulator and the tank connection as separate lines rather than folded into one number.

On electric, there is no AFUE to compare at all, because electric furnaces are regulated on blower energy rather than combustion efficiency, and the real comparison is not against another electric furnace but against a cold climate heat pump, which delivers several units of heat per unit of electricity and earns rebate money an electric furnace cannot.

Fuel cost context, since it comes up on every quote conversation: the Ontario Energy Board puts a typical Enbridge residential bill in the rate zone covering Peel at $1,028.62 CAD a year on an assumption of 2,400 cubic metres, effective with the July 1, 2026 rate change.

The federal carbon charge on natural gas was set to $0.00 effective April 1, 2025, down from 15.25 cents per cubic metre, which cut the cost of gas heat sharply and is the main reason a gas furnace still beats a heat pump on running cost in a gas heated Ontario home. What does a quote that is too cheap usually leave out?

A pattern shows up often enough to name. Here are the five omissions that most often explain a gap, and what each one costs you later rather than today.

The regulations also carry a separate item permitting an 80 per cent AFUE non-condensing furnace in a defined replacement case, so the blanket claim that 95 per cent is the only legal option is not quite right. Oil furnaces are set at 83 per cent.

How many carbon monoxide alarms do I need with a new furnace?

A home with a fuel-burning appliance needs an alarm adjacent to each sleeping area, and since January 1, 2026 also on every storey of the home, including storeys with no bedrooms. A new gas furnace is a fuel-burning appliance, so the requirement applies. Ask your contractor to confirm placement as part of the job.

Final verdict

Compare furnace quotes sheet by sheet, not total by total. A quote that names the model, the AFUE, the measured capacity, the venting plan, the permit and the disposal is describing a whole job, and only quotes that describe the same job can be compared on price at all. When one sheet is short by four lines and cheaper by eleven hundred dollars, you have found the four lines, not a bargain.

Then check two things that cost nothing: that the company appears on TSSA's registry of registered fuels contractors, and that somebody measured your house before naming a capacity. Everything else on a furnace quote can be renegotiated. The size cannot, and you live with it for fifteen years. An air conditioner rarely gets replaced calmly. It gets replaced during the first stretch of humid July weather, from whichever contractor answers the phone, at whatever number is quoted at the door. This guide exists so the pricing conversation happens in April instead. A number on a web page is a starting point, not a quote. Cooling load, duct condition, coil cabinet size and the state of the electrical panel move the final figure more than any of the bands above suggest, which is why our air conditioner installation in Mississauga service starts with a free in-home measurement rather than a phone estimate.

Where the national price guides are right, and where they are not. The Ontario and Canada-wide cost guides that rank for this question get the broad shape correct: a basic single stage system for a small home really is the cheapest job on the list, and Ontario labour really does sit at the top of the national range. What none of them publish is the part that varies by address, because they are written nationally: the municipal permit, the electrical notification, and which utility you call. That is most of this page.

Renting instead of buying. Renting removes the upfront cost and bundles repairs into a monthly fee, which suits a household that is short on cash today or selling within a few years; buying costs less over the life of the unit and leaves you owning an asset. What actually drives the price of an AC installation?

Eight line items separate a cheap quote from a complete one, and only the first two are about the equipment. When two quotes differ by thousands, the gap is almost always in rows three through eight of the table below rather than in the model number.

Charge and airflow are set on site. A system installed to the wrong charge loses efficiency it was certified to deliver, whatever its SEER2 number says on the box.

What size air conditioner does a Mississauga home need?

Cooling capacity is measured in tons, and one ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour of heat removed. The size is set by a heat loss and heat gain calculation, not by floor area, and an oversized unit is a worse outcome than a slightly undersized one: it cools the air quickly, shuts off before it has pulled moisture out, and leaves a house that is cold and clammy at the same time. That is the most common complaint we are called back to fix on somebody else's install.

A 1990s two storey in Meadowvale with west facing windows and a finished basement does not need the same equipment as a bungalow of identical floor area in Streetsville. If a salesperson names a tonnage from the driveway without going inside, that is not sizing, it is guessing, and it is a reason to get another quote. What SEER2 rating do you actually need?

SEER2 is the seasonal cooling efficiency rating that replaced SEER, and every new split system central air conditioner sold in Canada already clears a federal floor, so the real decision is how far above that floor to buy. Natural Resources Canada sets the minimum for single phase split system central air conditioners at SEER2 13.4, in force since January 1, 2023, with an off mode power draw of 30 W or less.

Does the upgrade pay for itself? In Peel Region the honest answer is that the cooling season is short and the heating season is long, so the electricity saving on an efficiency upgrade is real but modest. The stronger argument for variable speed is comfort: longer, slower cycles pull far more humidity out of the air, and the outdoor unit is quieter at the property line. Buy efficiency for the bill, and buy variable speed for the house.

What permits and electrical work does an AC install need?

Two separate approvals apply to an air conditioner installation in Ontario, and they come from two different bodies. The City of Mississauga lists "heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system" among the work that requires a building permit, and the Electrical Safety Authority requires a notification of work for new electrical installations, filed by the Licensed Electrical Contractor doing the job.

On the electrical side, ESA Bulletin 2-3-19, issued May 2025, is explicit: "All new installations require a notification to be filed regardless of the worker designation." A new dedicated 240 volt circuit and an outdoor disconnect for a condenser is a new installation. A like-for-like condenser swap onto an existing, adequate circuit can fall under the replacement exemption, which is one of the questions worth putting to your contractor in writing.

Who issues what, by service area. Building permits are municipal, so the fee schedule changes at the city line even though the equipment does not. Refrigerant and live circuits are not homeowner work: under Ontario Regulation 463/10, Ozone Depleting Substances and Other Halocarbons, a certified technician is the only person who can remove, discharge, handle and dispose of refrigerants. The credential is an Ozone Depletion Prevention card, valid for five years, and it is what allows a technician to buy and handle refrigerant in Ontario at all.

On the electrical side, the Electrical Safety Authority states that by law only a Licensed Electrical Contractor can be hired to do electrical work on a home in Ontario. Ask to see the ESA licence number and the ODP card. Both are reasonable requests and any legitimate contractor expects them.

Are there rebates for a new air conditioner in Ontario in 2026?

There is no published Ontario rebate for a standalone central air conditioner. The Home Renovation Savings Program, run by Enbridge Gas with Save on Energy, lists its eligible upgrades openly, and cooling only equipment is not among them: the list covers home energy assessments, insulation, windows and doors, air sealing, heat pump water heaters, cold climate air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, smart thermostats, solar and battery, and appliances. That absence is the verifiable fact. The program does not publish a sentence declaring air conditioners ineligible, and neither should anyone quoting it.

Two corrections worth carrying away from this page. First, the smart thermostat rebate is $100 CAD, not $75 CAD. The increase is written into the Home Renovation Savings Program smart thermostat terms and conditions dated January 2026, and Save on Energy prints the old figure struck through beside the new one. Several Ontario contractor guides still publish $75 CAD because the older Enbridge landing page still carries it in its page description.

Second, the Canada Greener Homes Loan is closed: Natural Resources Canada states that funding is fully committed and new loan applications cannot be approved, on a page last modified April 17, 2026. Should you price a heat pump instead of an air conditioner?

A cold climate heat pump cools a house exactly the way an air conditioner does, using the same outdoor unit footprint, the same indoor coil and the same install day, and it also heats in shoulder season. That is why the rebate gap matters: on a three ton system in an electrically heated home, up to $3,750 CAD of the price difference comes back through the Home Renovation Savings Program, and a plain air conditioner returns nothing. Where the plain air conditioner still wins, honestly. If the furnace is only a few years old, the home is heated with natural gas, and the budget is the binding constraint, an air conditioner is the lower upfront cost and the simpler job, and no rebate closes a gap that size in a gas heated home where the cap is $2,000 CAD. Heat pumps also need pre-approval before installation, which rules them out when a unit has already failed in a heat wave and the household needs cooling this week. And the rebate is not free money: it is paperwork, a qualified products list check, and a wait.

What does it cost to run a central AC in Mississauga?

Two numbers set the summer bill: how many kilowatt hours the system draws, and what a kilowatt hour costs at the hour it runs. Ontario Energy Board Regulated Price Plan prices have been in effect since November 1, 2025 and run to October 31, 2026, and the summer hour blocks below applied from May 1, 2026. The seasonal swap of on-peak and mid-peak hours happens every May 1 and November 1, so it is a schedule, not news.

Air conditioning runs hardest in exactly the hours that cost the most, which is why the free moves matter: pre-cool the house before 11 a.m. and let the thermostat drift a degree or two through the on-peak block, change the filter monthly through the summer, and book a spring air conditioner maintenance visit so the coil is clean and the charge is right before the first heat wave. The local mechanism nobody else publishes. Electricity prices are provincial, but the utility you contact to switch between Time-of-Use, Tiered and Ultra-Low Overnight is not. How do you compare AC quotes in Mississauga?

Line up three written quotes and check that every one of them answers the same eight questions, because a quote that is missing four of these is not cheaper, it is shorter. This is the checklist we would want a homeowner to hold us to.

Model number, tonnage and SEER2 rating written out, not "high efficiency 2 ton".
How the size was determined. A load calculation done inside the home, not floor area math done in the driveway.
The indoor coil, named and matched to the existing furnace, with cabinet work priced if the coil does not fit.
Pad, line set, disconnect and thermostat: each one marked included or extra.
Building permit and ESA notification, with who files them and what they cost.
Old unit removal and refrigerant recovery, by a technician holding an ODP card.
Warranty in years, split three ways: parts, compressor, and the installer's own labour warranty.
Total with HST, plus the rental or financing terms in full if either is on the table.

One ton removes 12,000 BTU per hour. An oversized unit cools quickly, shuts off early and leaves the house humid, which is the most common complaint after a rushed replacement.

How long does an air conditioner installation take?

A like for like central air conditioner replacement on existing ducts is normally a one day job of roughly four to eight hours, covering removal, pad and unit set, line set, disconnect, vacuum, charge and test. Ductless installs run about half a day per zone. Resizing the indoor coil cabinet or upgrading the electrical panel can add a day.

Should I get a heat pump instead of an air conditioner?

Price both if the furnace is over ten years old or the home is heated with electricity, because a cold climate heat pump cools the same way, heats in shoulder season and earns rebate money an air conditioner cannot. If the furnace is nearly new, the home is on natural gas and the budget is fixed, a central air conditioner remains the lower upfront cost.

Final verdict

Price the job, not the box. Two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands of dollars without either one being dishonest, because one of them included the coil, the line set, the permit, the electrical notification and the disposal, and the other left them to be discovered later. Ask every contractor the eight questions above and the field narrows quickly.

Then ask the one question that moves more money than any of them: what does a cold climate heat pump of the same tonnage cost after the rebate? In a gas heated home the answer is often that an air conditioner still wins on upfront cost. In an electrically heated home it very often is not. What changed on April 1, 2025, and why it settled this question

The federal carbon charge on natural gas went to zero on April 1, 2025, and that one line cut the cost of gas heat by about a third. Enbridge states it plainly: the charge was 15.25 cents per cubic metre from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, and "on March 15, 2025, the federal government set the federal carbon charge to $0.00, effective April 1, 2025."

Run that through the arithmetic below and the consequence for heat pump vs furnace running cost is stark. Nothing about heat pumps got worse. Gas simply got cheaper faster than any equipment upgrade could match.

This is worth stating plainly because a great deal of Ontario heat pump advice still online was written before that date and has not been restamped. If a page tells you a heat pump is cheaper to run than gas in Ontario and does not name its gas price, check when it was written.

What do electricity and natural gas actually cost in Ontario right now?

Electricity is priced by the Ontario Energy Board under the Regulated Price Plan and has not changed since November 1, 2025; natural gas is priced quarterly and changed most recently on July 1, 2026. Both are the commodity lines only. Your Alectra, Hydro One, Milton Hydro, Halton Hills Hydro or Toronto Hydro bill adds delivery and regulatory charges and subtracts the Ontario Electricity Rebate, and your gas bill adds a fixed $27.69 CAD monthly customer charge.

A cross-check on that gas figure: the Ontario Energy Board's own July 2026 backgrounder puts a typical EGD residential bill at $1,028.62 CAD a year for 2,400 cubic metres, which works out to 42.9 cents per cubic metre all in. The gap between that and our 28.3 to 30.3 cents is the fixed monthly charge, which spreads to about 13.8 cents per cubic metre at that consumption. The per-unit lines are the right ones for comparing heating fuel, because the fixed charge is there whether you heat with gas or not.

Time-of-Use hours flip twice a year, so check which season you are in

The OEB swaps the on-peak and mid-peak blocks every May 1 and November 1, so the same 20.3 cent price lands on different hours depending on the date. This is a recurring seasonal cycle, not news, but it changes the answer for a heating question because winter on-peak covers the morning and evening hours when a house is coldest.

How do you compare a heat pump and a furnace fairly?

Put heat pump vs furnace running cost into one unit, cents per kWh of heat actually delivered into the house. Two conversions get you there, and neither is complicated.

First, gas is billed by volume, not energy. Natural Resources Canada states that one cubic metre of natural gas contains approximately 37.5 megajoules, which is 10.42 kWh. A furnace does not capture all of it: its Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE, is the share it delivers as useful heat. NRCan puts condensing furnaces at 90 to 98 per cent AFUE. So a 95 per cent furnace delivers about 9.90 kWh of heat per cubic metre of gas burned.

Second, a heat pump does not make heat, it moves it, so it delivers more heat than the electricity it consumes. That ratio is the coefficient of performance, or COP, and it falls as the outdoor air gets colder. Electric baseboards and electric furnaces have a COP of exactly 1. The whole method is two divisions: gas price per cubic metre divided by useful kWh per cubic metre, and electricity price per kWh divided by COP.

On heat pump vs furnace running cost, a gas furnace delivers heat for about 2.9 cents per kWh at today's Ontario prices, and a heat pump lands anywhere between 1.3 and 13 cents depending on the outdoor temperature and, more than most people expect, on which electricity rate plan the house is on.

Two things jump out of that table. A heat pump on Ultra-Low Overnight power is cheaper than gas by a wide margin, and the same heat pump on Ultra-Low Overnight on-peak power between 4 and 9 p.m. costs nearly seven times what gas costs. Ultra-Low Overnight is not a better plan, it is a sharper one.

The 2.93 cents per kWh benchmark. Everything in the table above is measured against what a 95 per cent AFUE gas furnace delivers, which is why the AFUE on the label matters as much as the heat pump's COP.

The break-even COP, the single number that settles it

The break-even COP reduces heat pump vs furnace running cost to a single number: the efficiency a heat pump has to hit to match a 95 per cent gas furnace on the same house, and it depends entirely on which electricity rate plan you are on. Compare it against the COP your unit actually delivers at a given outdoor temperature and you have your answer without any further arithmetic.

Natural Resources Canada puts air-source COP at 2.0 to 5.4 at plus 8 degrees Celsius and 1.1 to 3.7 at minus 8 degrees Celsius. Set those against the table and the pattern is clear: on Ultra-Low Overnight a heat pump beats gas in every condition an Ontario winter produces, on off-peak Time-of-Use it is roughly a tie in mild weather and a loss in cold, and at any peak price it loses every time.

How we know this

We calculated it rather than quoted it, and the whole method is above so you can repeat it. Gas cost per kWh of heat equals the price per cubic metre divided by 37.5 megajoules times the AFUE, converted at 3.6 megajoules per kWh. Heat pump cost per kWh of heat equals the electricity price divided by the COP. Energy content is the Natural Resources Canada figure, COPs are NRCan's own measured test results rather than manufacturer best cases, and both energy prices are the current regulated ones. Every rate on this page moves: gas quarterly, electricity on November 1. Re-run the arithmetic rather than trusting a page that was right last year.

What this cannot know is your house: its insulation, its ductwork, the balance point your equipment actually holds, and how many hours your thermostat calls in each pricing window. That is what the free in-home estimate measures.

Heat pump vs furnace running cost: when does the heat pump win?

Three situations, all common across Peel and Halton, where the arithmetic favours a heat pump without argument.

Homes heated with electricity. Baseboards and electric furnaces deliver heat at 9.8 to 20.3 cents per kWh because their COP is 1. A cold-climate heat pump cuts that by half to two thirds across a season. This is the strongest financial case in Ontario and it also earns the largest rebate, up to $7,500 CAD instead of $2,000 CAD.
Homes heated with oil or propane. Rural Caledon, the edges of Bolton and parts of Halton Hills. Delivered fuel prices are volatile and generally well above natural gas per unit of heat, and the rebate treats these homes exactly like electric ones.
Homes on Ultra-Low Overnight that can shift heating into the overnight window. A well-insulated house with a smart thermostat can pre-heat overnight at 3.9 cents and coast through the 4 to 9 p.m. block. That is the only configuration where a heat pump beats gas outright in a Peel winter, and it demands a house that holds heat.
Homes that can drop gas service entirely. If the furnace, water heater and stove all go electric, the $27.69 CAD monthly customer charge disappears, worth $332 CAD a year before HST. That matters for small, tight homes.

Possible downside, stated plainly. We sell and install both, so read this with that in mind. For a gas-heated home in Peel in 2026, we will usually tell you the heat pump will not cut your winter fuel bill. The reasons to buy one are the air conditioner it replaces, the rebate, the shoulder-season comfort and the emissions. If a contractor promises you a large winter fuel saving on a gas home, ask them for their gas price per cubic metre and their assumed COP.

How does a cold-climate heat pump perform in an Ontario winter?

Cold-climate units keep working well below freezing, with capacity and efficiency both falling as the temperature drops. Natural Resources Canada says newer air-source models operate down to between minus 15 and minus 25 degrees Celsius. In NRCan's own Ottawa-area test house, a ducted cold-climate unit measured a COP averaging 1.5 at minus 21.1 degrees Celsius and 3.0 at plus 4.9 degrees Celsius, and a mini-split held close to 2.0 at minus 25 degrees Celsius.

Two caveats decide how that translates into a bill. Capacity falls with temperature, so NRCan's guidance is to size a heat pump to cover the majority of the annual heating energy and let a supplementary system carry the occasional peak. And in Mississauga and Brampton the coldest hours land in the winter on-peak windows, which means a heat pump's least efficient operation coincides with its most expensive electricity. Safety, on the gas side. Gas furnaces, their venting and their combustion air are regulated work in Ontario. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requires fuels fired appliances to be installed and serviced by TSSA registered contractors employing TSSA certified gas technicians. A poorly vented gas appliance can produce carbon monoxide, which is colourless and odourless. If a CO alarm sounds, leave the building and call 911 from outside.

Safety, on the electrical side. Adding a heat pump or electric backup heat can push a home past the capacity of its existing electrical service. That assessment, and any panel or service upgrade it calls for, is licensed electrical work under the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Is a dual-fuel or hybrid system worth it in Ontario?

A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and switches between them at a set outdoor temperature. Natural Resources Canada calls that switchover the economic balance point: "the temperature below which the ratio of electricity to a supplemental fuel means that using the supplementary system is more cost effective."

On the numbers above, that balance point in Peel Region today is warmer than most people expect. On off-peak power a heat pump at COP 3 roughly ties a 95 per cent furnace, and at COP 2 it loses. At any peak price the furnace wins at every temperature. So a dual-fuel setup in a gas home in 2026 saves money by running the heat pump in mild, cheap-electricity hours and letting the furnace carry the cold snaps and the peak windows.

The fuel saving is smaller than the marketing suggests. The practical wins are real: you keep gas heat as backup, you replace the air conditioner, and you qualify for the $2,000 CAD heat pump rebate on equipment you were buying anyway. And if electricity gets cheaper relative to gas, or a carbon charge returns to gas bills, the balance point moves colder and the heat pump does more of the work. Upfront cost, rebates and what each system lasts

A heat pump costs more upfront than a furnace and earns a rebate a furnace cannot, and both last roughly the same number of years. Natural Resources Canada puts air-source heat pump service life at 15 to 20 years, and a condensing gas furnace in Ontario typically lasts about the same.

The rental line is worth reading twice. If you rent a heat pump instead of buying one, the rebate drops to the gas-home tier even if your house runs on electricity, which can cost you $5,500 CAD of rebate.
