Short answer: Short cycling means your furnace starts, runs for only a few minutes (or seconds), shuts off, then starts again. The most common causes are:

  • A clogged filter that makes the furnace overheat and trip its safety limit.
  • A dirty flame sensor.
  • A blocked exhaust or intake pipe.
  • A thermostat in the wrong spot.
  • A furnace that is too big for the house.

Change the filter and check the vents first. If it keeps happening, book a repair. Short cycling wears parts out and wastes gas.

What short cycling looks like

In cold weather, a furnace that is sized and working properly runs in fairly long stretches. Short cycling is different:

  • The burners light and the furnace shuts off again within a few minutes, over and over.
  • Or the burners light and go out within seconds.

You may notice:

  • Rooms that never quite reach the set temperature.
  • The blower starting and stopping often.
  • A higher gas bill.

Common causes

Cause What happens Can you check it?
Clogged air filter Not enough air moves over the heat exchanger, it overheats, and the high-limit switch shuts the burners off Yes. Replace the filter
Dirty flame sensor The burners light, but the control cannot “see” the flame, so it shuts the gas off within seconds No. A technician cleans or replaces it
Blocked exhaust or intake pipe A high-efficiency furnace’s pressure switch stops the burners when venting is blocked, often by snow, ice or debris Yes, look outside. Clear snow gently by hand
Thermostat location or settings A thermostat near a supply register, a lamp or a sunny window reaches the set temperature too early Partly. Check batteries and what is near it
Clogged condensate drain On a high-efficiency furnace a backed-up drain can trip a safety switch A technician should clear it
Furnace too big for the house It heats the space so fast that it shuts off before a full cycle No. It needs a heat-loss calculation
Failing control board, limit switch or blower Parts wear and trip early No. Book a repair

Safe checks before you call

  1. Replace the filter. This fixes a large share of short cycling calls.
  2. Open supply registers and return grilles that are closed or blocked by furniture.
  3. Look at the outside pipes of a high-efficiency furnace. They are two white plastic pipes through the wall. Clear snow or leaves by hand only.
  4. Check the thermostat. Fresh batteries, set to Heat, and nothing warm right next to it.

Do not open the burner compartment, bypass a safety switch or reset the furnace over and over. A safety switch that keeps tripping is telling you something is wrong.

Why it is worth fixing

Every start puts wear on the igniter, the control board and the blower motor. A furnace that short cycles also spends more of its time in the least efficient part of its run. If an oversized furnace is the cause, the honest fix is a correctly sized replacement when the time comes. Our furnace size guide explains how a heat-loss calculation works.

Frequently asked questions

What is furnace short cycling?

Short cycling is when a furnace turns on, runs for only a few minutes or seconds, shuts off, and repeats. A healthy furnace in cold weather runs in longer stretches.

Can a dirty filter cause short cycling?

Yes. A clogged filter restricts airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and the high-limit safety switch shuts the burners off. Replacing the filter is the first thing to try.

Why does my furnace turn on and then off after a few seconds?

The most common reason is a dirty flame sensor. The burners light, but the control cannot confirm the flame, so it shuts off the gas. A technician can clean or replace the sensor.

Can snow cause my furnace to short cycle?

Yes, on a high-efficiency furnace. If snow or ice blocks the white plastic intake or exhaust pipes outside, a pressure switch stops the burners. Clear the pipes gently by hand.

Is short cycling dangerous?

It is usually a sign that a safety switch is doing its job, but the cause can be serious, such as overheating or blocked venting. Do not bypass the switch or keep resetting the furnace; book a repair.
