Evaporator Coil Leak: Is It Covered by Warranty in Ontario?
By Mario Vaghei, General Manager, Aire One Peel Heating & Cooling · Published November 2, 2026 · Facts verified October 30, 2026
Short answer
Often, yes, for the part. On Carrier evaporator coils, the original owner of an owner-occupied home gets a 10-year parts limited warranty if the equipment was registered on time, within 90 days of installation. If it was not registered, the warranty is 5 years. The coil warranty covers parts. Labour and refrigerant are usually separate, so check your installer's labour warranty too.

What the evaporator coil does
The evaporator coil sits on top of your furnace or air handler. In summer, cold refrigerant runs through it and pulls heat and moisture out of the air. With a heat pump it works in winter too. If the coil develops a leak, refrigerant escapes and the system loses its ability to cool, and a heat pump also loses heating capacity.
Signs of a leaking coil
- The air conditioner runs but the air is not cold.
- Ice on the coil or on the copper line.
- A hissing sound near the indoor unit.
- Longer run times and higher electricity bills.
A technician confirms a leak with a leak test. Ask to see where the leak is and the model and serial number of the coil.
What Carrier's coil warranty covers

What is usually not in the coil warranty
- Labour. The coil warranty is a parts warranty. Who pays for the technician's time depends on your installer's labour warranty. Our labour warranty guide explains how that works in Ontario.
- Refrigerant. Recharging the system after a leak is usually billed separately.
- Damage from other causes, such as poor installation or lack of maintenance, depending on the certificate's terms.
How to make a claim
- Find the coil's model and serial number (on the coil cabinet's label) and your installation date.
- Check whether the equipment was registered. Your installer or the manufacturer can look it up.
- Ask your installer to confirm the leak and file the warranty claim for the part.
- Ask for a written quote showing parts, labour and refrigerant on separate lines.
Our guide to air conditioner warranties lists what is and is not covered in general. If you have a heat pump, see our heat pump warranty guide.
Repair, replace the coil, or replace the system?
- Small, reachable leak on a newer system: sometimes repairable. Ask the technician whether a repair is likely to hold.
- Coil leak under the parts warranty: replacing the coil under warranty is often the best value. You pay labour and refrigerant.
- Older system out of warranty: compare the cost of a new coil plus labour and refrigerant with replacing the system.
