Choosing an air conditioner for your home

The right air conditioner depends on your ductwork, the rooms you need to cool and how long you plan to stay in the home. Here is how the main options compare, with links to the pages that go deeper.

Central air or ductless

Central air is usually the lowest installed price when the home already has ductwork in reasonable condition and you want the whole house cooled. A ductless mini split fits homes with no ducts, rooms that will not hold temperature, or owners who want a cold-climate heat pump that heats as well as cools. Correct sizing matters more than the brand

An oversized air conditioner reaches the set temperature quickly and shuts off before it has removed enough moisture, so the house feels cool but clammy. What size air conditioner does my home need?

It depends on the home, not just the square footage. Insulation, windows, sun exposure and air leakage all change how much cooling a house needs, so a proper sizing assessment should come before any quote. An oversized unit short cycles and leaves the house clammy, and an undersized one runs constantly on hot days.

When is the best time to install a new air conditioner?

Spring, before the first heat wave, or early fall, after the peak season. Installation dates are easier to book, and you have time to compare options instead of replacing a failed unit in the middle of summer.

Do you install ductless mini split systems?
