Ductless vs central air in Ontario comes down to one question before any other: does your home already have ductwork worth using? If it does, central air is usually the cheaper and simpler answer. If it does not, the comparison changes completely, and so does the rebate you can claim. Central air is the better choice for most Ontario homes that already have sound ductwork, because you are only replacing one outdoor unit and one coil. Ductless wins where there are no ducts, where one room will not hold temperature, or where a cold climate heat pump qualifies for an Ontario rebate.
That first sentence is the short version. The rest of this page is the arithmetic behind it, including the rebate that changes it.
Do you already have ducts?
The single question that settles most of this comparison is whether your home has ductwork that is already in reasonable condition. Everything else is secondary to it. A home with sound ducts can take central air for the cost of the equipment and a day of labour. A home without ducts has to have them built, which means opening ceilings and walls, and that work often costs more than the air conditioner.
This is why the same two houses on the same Mississauga street can get opposite advice. A 1970s side split with a finished basement and existing trunk lines is a central air house. A 1920s Brampton semi with radiators and no ducts anywhere is a ductless house, and no amount of comparing SEER2 numbers changes that.

What each system costs in Ontario
Installed prices in Ontario in 2026 overlap heavily at the low end and separate at the high end. The band below reflects what Ontario contractors are publishing publicly, not a quote for your home, and every one of these numbers moves with capacity, electrical work and how far the outdoor unit sits from the indoor equipment.

Read the two single-unit rows together and the sticker price argument mostly disappears. A single zone ductless system and a single stage central system land within a few hundred dollars of each other. The gap only opens once you add heads, or once you have to build ducts.
The rebate almost nobody mentions
A cold climate air source heat pump can qualify for up to $7,500 CAD under Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings program, and most ductless comparison pages leave this out entirely. That is a larger swing than any efficiency difference between the two systems, and it applies to ductless equipment that heats as well as cools.

Two honest qualifications, because this is where these pages usually overreach. First, the program does not list a separate ductless or mini split category. A ductless system qualifies only where the specific unit you install is a cold climate air source heat pump that appears on Natural Resources Canada’s list. Second, “up to” is doing real work in that sentence. The amount depends on the equipment and the program rules in force on your install date, so treat $7,500 CAD as a ceiling to check, not a number to budget.

What each costs to run
Running cost is decided far more by sizing and by how you use the system than by the badge on the outdoor unit. An oversized system of either type short cycles, which wastes electricity and leaves humidity behind. This is the part of the decision that a good load calculation settles and a spec sheet cannot.

We deliberately do not publish a maximum efficiency figure for either system here. Efficiency numbers vary by model and change between model years, and the only number that means anything for your quote is the one printed on the spec sheet of the exact unit being installed. Ask for it in writing. If a contractor quotes an efficiency figure without naming the model, that figure is decoration.
The duct loss number everyone repeats
You will see a claim that ducts lose 20 to 30 per cent of the energy moving through them repeated on nearly every Ontario page on this topic, and it appears in Google’s own AI summary of this question. It is worth understanding where it comes from before you let it decide anything.
That figure traces to United States research and to homes where ducts commonly run through unconditioned attics and crawl spaces. We could not locate an NRCan or Energy Star Canada figure that applies specifically to Ontario housing stock. The mechanism is real, but the size of the loss depends on where the ducts run. In most of the Peel Region homes we work in, the ducts run through a finished or semi-finished basement inside the heated envelope, where heat that leaks from a duct is not leaving the house. That is a materially different situation from a slab-on-grade home with attic ducts, and it is why we will not republish the number as though it applies evenly.
The honest version: if your ducts run through a cold attic, an unheated crawl space or a detached garage ceiling, duct losses are a genuine argument for ductless. If they run through your basement, they are a much weaker one.
Which system suits which Ontario home
Housing stock decides this more reliably than preference does. The table below maps the home types we work in across Peel Region and the west GTA to the system that usually fits, and names the exception in each case so the table is usable rather than merely tidy.

Best for: homes with no ductwork, homes with one room that never holds temperature, additions and finished attics, and anyone who wants heating and cooling from one system with a shot at the Ontario rebate.
Skip if: you already have sound ducts and you want whole home cooling at the lowest installed price. In that case go straight to air conditioner installation cost.
The possible downside, from us: ductless puts a visible unit on your wall in every room you cool, and multi zone systems climb past central air quickly on price. Some homeowners dislike the look enough that it outweighs the efficiency case, and that is a legitimate reason to choose central air.
Choose central air if
Best for: homes with existing ducts in decent condition, whole home cooling, and households that want the indoor equipment out of sight and one thermostat to think about.
Skip if: you have no ducts, or your problem is one specific room. Building ducts to solve a single hot bedroom is rarely the cheaper path.
The possible downside, from us: a cooling only central unit is not an eligible measure under the Home Renovation Savings program as it is written today, so the rebate that a cold climate heat pump can claim is simply not available on that path. If your ducts are also in poor shape, the repair cost belongs in the comparison and we will put it there.

Should I get mini splits or central air?
Get central air if your home already has ductwork in reasonable condition and you want whole home cooling at the lowest installed price. Get a ductless mini split if you have no ducts, if one room will not hold temperature, or if you want a cold climate heat pump that heats as well as cools and may qualify for an Ontario rebate.
What are the downsides of ductless air conditioning?
The indoor head is visible on the wall of every room you cool, and each head has its own small filter to clean. Multi zone systems climb past central air on price once you pass two or three heads. Ductless also does little for a closed off room with no direct air path from a head, which is a common disappointment in homes with many small rooms.
Is a mini split cheaper to run than central air?
Often, but not automatically. A mini split lets you cool only the rooms in use, which is where most of the saving comes from, and it avoids duct losses entirely. A correctly sized central system serving a home with ducts inside the heated envelope can run close to it. Sizing and usage decide this more than system type does.
What is cheaper to run, a ducted or split system?
A split system usually costs less to run when you only need part of the house cooled, because each head runs independently. A ducted system tends to win when you want the whole home at one temperature, since one larger compressor is generally more efficient than several small ones running at once. Match the system to how you actually live in the house.
What AC brands to stay away from?
We will not publish a list of brands to avoid, because that is not where the risk sits. Most failures we are called to are installation faults, wrong sizing, poor line set work or a system never commissioned properly, rather than a defective brand. Ask who is installing it, what their load calculation says, and what the warranty requires. Those answers predict outcomes better than the badge does.
Does a ductless system qualify for the Ontario heat pump rebate?
Only if the specific unit is a cold climate air source heat pump listed on Natural Resources Canada’s qualified products list. Ductless equipment is not eligible simply for being ductless, and cooling only models do not qualify at all. Confirm the exact model against the list, and confirm current amounts on the Save on Energy program page, before you count on any figure.
The final verdict
Ductless vs central air in Ontario has one honest default: for most homes with usable ductwork, central air remains the sensible answer, and we will tell you so even though ductless is the larger ticket. Where there are no ducts, where one room defeats the rest of the house, or where a listed cold climate heat pump brings the Home Renovation Savings rebate into play, ductless is not the compromise it is often presented as. It is the better system, and the rebate can close the price gap that used to be the argument against it.
The question to settle first is still the boring one. Walk your basement, find out where your ducts run and what condition they are in. That answer decides more of this than any spec sheet will.
